Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to 'extinguish' all interests in the Achimota Forest if he wants to conserve the area.
In an interview with Kofi Adoma on Angel TV's Anpa Bfo Morning Show on Wednesday, he indicated that the only way to ensure that the forest belt remains the same is to destroy the interests and issue a decree on the Achimota Forest properties.
"The greatest approach for preserving the Achimota Forest will be for the government to issue a decree prohibiting anybody from owning land in the Achimota Forest...
We should put an end to all forest-related concerns." After the government gave 361 acres of land back to the Owoo family through Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144 gazetted on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on April 19, 2022 by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, the issue of lands in the forest became a topic of national debate.
A declaration in Sir John's Will, which suggested that he was ready to give his estates in the Achimota Forest to his nephews and other family members, added gasoline to the fire.
The Will was also investigated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. "The Ministry takes the allegations seriously and has sought all documentation pertaining to the disputed lands as part of an initial investigation to determine the authenticity of the claims," the ministry said in a statement.
"The claims are based on events that precede the present Minister, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor's term."
"It's critical that he has full knowledge of the facts so that he can take proper action if the allegations are true."
"The Ministry assures the general public and the good people of Ghana that the national interest will always be maintained, particularly in matters related to the Achimota Forest," the statement said.
General Mosquito, on the other hand, believes that the best way to solve the problem is to prevent individuals from owning land in the forest.
"Government should prohibit anyone from holding land in the area, regardless of which political party they belong to, whether NPP, NDC, or CPP." He stated, "We can't punish one while protecting the other..."
