We Have Plans To Expand 'Alawa' Past GH800 – NSS
The National Service Scheme has intimated that the allowances provided to service people will be increased from the present GH559.
Gifty Oware-Mensah, Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), told Joy News in an interview that the scheme has previously presented a proposal to Parliament's Education Committee for consideration.
She did say, however, that the idea would only be implemented when it had been accepted and appropriated in the next budget.
"This [request for an upward adjustment in allowances] has already been filed by the NSS, and it's not because we're looking for it." I've even overheard people asking for GH800. We've brought something much more significant to Parliament's attention.
"But what's more significant is that we need authorization before we can spend, and the 2022 budget has already been authorized," she added. "All we can do now is hope and pray that the Education committee can help us make a case and receive the increase in the next hearing."
"All we can come up with will be the statistics when it comes up for appropriation," Madam Gifty Oware-Mensah continued, "but at this moment, all I can say is what I can say."
and, with certainty, it will be greater than the GH800 they are looking for."
NSS staff have recently complained about the insufficiency of their allowance and the delays in receiving it.
On Monday, a group calling themselves the Coalition of Suffering National Service Personnel protested their unpaid allowance on the streets of Accra.
Weachea Awaregya, the organization's president, has also requested an increase in the allowance.
The last time employees' allowances were increased was in April of 2017. They are now paid GH559 per month, although there have been several requests for an increase.
