‘AKUFO-ADDO GOVERNMENT NOT FIGHTING CORRUPTION BUT SILENCING CRITICS’ – ASIEDU NKETIA

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for prosecuting those who appear to be at odds with the government.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia claimed that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) charges its opponents of corruption and prosecutes them as retaliation, using the offices of the Attorney-General and Special Prosecutor.

According to him, such indictments are more of a plan to quiet opponents than a means of combating corruption.

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, a Member of Parliament (MP) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ajumako Enyan Esiam Constituency in the Central Region, was mentioned by the NDC General Secretary to bolster his claim.

The MP is on trial in Accra's Money and Economic Court for suspected financial mismanagement.

He allegedly knowingly authorized the establishment of "irrevocable letters of credit valued at EUR 3,950,000, out of which payments totaling EUR 2,270,000 were made to Big Sea General Trading Ltd of Dubai for the supply of vehicles purporting to be ambulances without due cause and authorization," according to the prosecution.

The government launched legal action against Mr Asiedu Nketia's party member because he opposed the passage of the electronic transaction levy, according to Mr Asiedu Nketia (e-levy).

"You may recall that Dr. Ato Forson was adamantly opposed to the e-levy. We were told he was being charged in court for supposedly signing a deal concerning several ambulances the following second.

"So that means that before you accuse someone of wrongdoing, they must have done something against you, and your way of retaliating is to falsely accuse them." If that's the case, they're opposing totalitarian rule, in which you're blamed when you speak. They are not fighting corruption in this manner."

On June 8, 2022, the NDC veteran said this during an interview with Kofi Adoma Nwanwani on Angel FM's Anopa Bofo morning program, which was also broadcast on Angel TV.
