Parliament will not meet on Friday, according to the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, in order for legislators to participate in the Green Ghana Day activity in their respective constituencies.

The government launched the Green Ghana Day as part of its attempts to reclaim the lost forest reserve.

"Mobilizing for a Greener Future" is the theme for this year's exercise.

Forests continue to be one of Ghana's most valuable resources, but there is a significant loss in the country's forest cover, President Kufuor stated in his keynote address at the inauguration of the exercise earlier this week at the Accra International Conference Centre.

He asked for a coordinated response to this threat. The Green Ghana Initiative aims to mobilize a communal effort to restore the country's damaged landscapes, reduce climate change, and instill in the youth the importance of planting and maintaining trees, as well as the advantages that come with it, he stated.

"Since 1900, Ghana has lost a whopping 80% of its forest cover and as a result, we have a crisis situation, climate change is reaching a tipping point, and Ghana, as a respected member of the international community, is contributing its quota to the global efforts to halt climate change," he said at a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, June 8, ahead of the Green Ghana Day exercise on Friday, June 10.

He also announced that the Ministry intends to plant 10 million saplings in reserve compartments and another 10 million in schools, churches, houses, mosques, and other public spaces around the country.

"I'd like to express my gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament and the Honourable Members of the august House of Parliament for their enthusiastic support for this year's Green Ghana Day."

"In fact, as you are probably aware, the Speaker has just declared that Parliament will not meet on Friday." This would allow Members of Parliament to visit to their areas and lead their constituents in celebrating Green Ghana Day this year. We wish to express our gratitude to the speaker for making such an important decision. This provides us with a lot of push and drive as we move on.

"This year, we have agreed to plant 10 billion seedlings in on-reserve compartments and 10 million seedlings around the nation – in schools, church complexes, mosques, and on the streets, in our houses, and in public spaces of our country," the Damongo politician continued.

"We're planting ten million trees in a forest reserve and ten million trees around the country." We are appealing to all Ghanaians, residents of Ghana, and visitors to Ghana to join forces with the government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as well as the Forestry Commission, to ensure that this noble and monumental initiative is a resounding success."
