Simiso Buthelezi, a 24-year-old South African boxer, died two days after being videotaped disoriented and swinging into empty air during a title battle on Sunday, June 5.

When the boxer became disoriented in the dying seconds of the last round, he was facing Siphesihle Mntungwa for the WBF African lightweight title. Buthelezi was on the verge of winning when he got his opponent through the ropes before losing control of the battle. After noticing anything was incorrect, the quick-thinking referee had to stop the battle.

Buthelezi was subsequently verified to be undergoing medical treatment in Durban, but he died on Tuesday, June 7.

'It is with great regret that Boxing South Africa and the Buthelezi family announce the demise of Mr. Simiso Buthelezi, who died away last night, June 7, 2022 at a Durban hospital,' said a statement.

Mr Buthelezi competed in a boxing contest held by Starline Boxing Promotions in Greyville, Durban, on June 5, 2022.

Mr Buthelezi slumped at the conclusion of his session and was rushed to the hospital, where it was revealed that he had suffered a head injury that resulted in internal hemorrhage.

Mr. Buthelezi was given the finest treatment available in the hospital, but he died of his injuries last night, as previously stated. Boxing South Africa will undertake an independent medical examination of the injury and make a decision based on the findings.

The Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa appreciate the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture's sincere sympathies. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due time by the Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa.'

'There's no change in his condition, he's in a coma, he's not talking, moving, or doing anything right now,' his trainer said after seeing Buthelezi in hospital on Monday. According to the physicians, a hit to the head may have caused a blood clot on the brain.' Buthelezi was 'almost probably' on pace for a decision victory in his fifth professional battle before the late twist, according to boxing pundit Tim Boxeo.

Buthelezi had a perfect 4-0 professional record before to his match.
