According to Sam George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, the Pro-LGBTQ+ billboard on the Accra-Tema highway has been dismantled following a request from the sponsors of the Anti LGBT+ Bill in Parliament.
Sam George expressed his thanks to authorities in a tweet on Thursday evening, thanking them for removing the pro-LGBTQ+ billboard.
"The rude LGBTQI+ billboard was removed this evening following our press engagement today, according to information reaching me." We applaud the authorities for their quick action. "We are a law-abiding country that will battle to the last end to safeguard our cultural sovereignty," he tweeted.
On Monday, supporters of the Anti LGBT+ Bill in Parliament gave the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, a 24-hour deadline to remove billboards around the city that encourage gay activity.
The massive billboards were put on key highways around the country in honor of LGBT pride month, which occurs every June. The group's rainbow colors are featured on one of the billboards noted at the end of the Tema-Accra bound side of the highway, along with an inscription advertising their activities.
Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George spoke to the media at the location of the billboards, calling it an insult to the country's laws and giving the police a 24-hour deadline to remove them.
"Over the weekend, our attention was directed to an infraction that contradicts Ghana's Constitution, namely Articles 11 and 26 of the 1992 Constitution, which refer to the country's cultural sovereignty. We saw that a billboard advertising the LGBTQ community's events had been placed along the highway.
"We are asking on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, to immediately carry out the appropriate security operations, that this billboard, which is an insult to the 1992 Constitution, be removed in cooperation with the MCE for the area," he stated.
If the Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, continues to postpone the passing of the Anti-LGBT Bill, the Minority in Parliament has vowed to obstruct the presentation of any bill by the Executive.
Muntaka Mubarak, the Minority Chief Whip, accused the Chairman of purposefully delaying the passage of the Anti-LGBTQI Bill. As a result, the Minority Group will continue to oppose any bill introduced by the House of Representatives.
Mr. Muntaka Mubarak stated that the Chairman should have followed proper procedure in passing the bill.
"I can promise you that any other law submitted in the House would be met with opposition, even if it is to give water," said Muntaka Mubarak, the Minority Chief Whip.
