Vincent Oppong Asamoah, a member of Parliament's Works and Housing Committee and the MP for Dormaa West, has criticized Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for the devastation caused by recent floods in Accra.
This week, JoyNews obtained a series of documents outlining many requests from the Works and Housing Ministry to the Finance Ministry for monies to be provided so that the Ministry may carry out initiatives to make the city more flood-resistant.
All of the letters and petitions were not replied to, according to the Works and Housing Ministry, as floods continued to cause havoc in certain districts of Accra.
The Finance Minister, according to the Dormaa West MP, does not prioritize the issue of floods and property safety, despite the Works and Housing Ministry's assertion.
Ken Ofori-Atta, he claims, is the government of Akufo-biggest Addo's issue.
"During that period, no releases were given for all of the requests that were submitted." So all of the problems we're facing in Accra are due to the Minister of Finance's limits, not the Works and Housing Minister's. Let me tell you, the Finance Minister is the NPP's biggest challenge as a government.
"He prioritizes where he should release money and where he should not release money," he told JoyNews' Kwaku Asante. "If the situation that we find ourselves in Accra, especially this year, is any indication, then I should tell you that this government has failed and the Finance Minister has failed Ghanaians because he decided not to prioritize the release of funds, especially to clear the drains and other works that were supposed to have taken place."
Mr. Asamoah claimed that the Finance Minister selectively provides funding to departments that are in his 'good books,' adding that a responsible administration would have provided funds quickly to handle the country's flooding crisis.
"The President is merely a figurehead; he chooses where the money should go, and if you aren't on the Finance Minister's good side, you won't get the money."
"Talk about a government that is so responsible and wants to work on the welfare or needs of its citizens, and you don't prioritize issues of flooding," he said. "Flooding has been a perennial issue, so once we get to the major rains, all we have to do is fix the issue before it becomes excessive."
