The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has planted 71,000 tree seedlings as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

The activity was part of the university's contribution to the government's "Green Ghana Project," which will see 20 million trees planted around the country beginning on Friday, June 10, 2022.

The government launched the "Green Ghana Project" through the Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

In a brief opening statement, UCC Vice-Chancellor Johnson Nyarkoh Boampong urged Ghanaians to take purposeful actions to restore the lost vegetation cover caused by human activities in order to offset climate change concerns.

He pointed out that deforestation had resulted in lower oxygen levels in the atmosphere, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and the advent of different unknown diseases, all of which required immediate attention.

As a result, Professor Boampong applauded the government for launching the Green Ghana Project, which he claims will go a long way toward recovering, if not all, of the country's forest cover.

The institution fostered the 30,000 trees planted last year, according to the Vice Chancellor, and they were flourishing well.

He explained that the institution was teaching students about effective agriculture in order to instill in them the habit of planting and nurturing.  Professor Boampong stated that part of his aim to green UCC and safeguard the environment included planting trees in accordance with the government's Green Ghana Project.

Exotic species such as teak and mahogany, Ofram, cedrela, and others were among the trees planted on the 60 hectares of school site.

The Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, who took part in the event, said it was critical to fight the climate with the planting effort in order to restore the forest.

He advised that the practice be done monthly rather than yearly to speed up the recovery of lost reserves, and he urged the commission to make sure that all of the trees planted were tracked to assure the intended effects.
