Even before the project's full completion, the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project has been subjected to theft operations throughout the route.

According to John Peter Amewu, Minister of Railway Development, over 250 bolts and nuts used in rail fittings had been taken by unknown people in the Tema Harbour to Afienya region.

Given the amount of money invested in the project, he regarded the situation as disheartening.

During a tour of the project site with the media, Mr. Amewu issued a warning to Ghanaians living along that length, stating that anyone caught stealing components of the train lines will face the law.

"Let me issue a caution to Ghanaians who live near railway properties." Educating the broader public at large that stealing assets and equipment for projects is unethical and unethical. Look at the type of work we've done on this line all the way from Tema to Mpakadan, and the money that's been spent."

"Even though it is not as ubiquitous as the Western line, some have begun to remove the bolts and nuts. However, we have discovered that around 250 of them have been stolen from the Tema Port area, despite the fact that the project is still underway," he stated.

"We must preserve state properties and refrain from such behavior," he continued. The engineers have informed me that anti-theft equipment would be installed on the rails very soon to avoid some of these acts," he told Joy Business.

The Minister also led his team in planting over 100 trees along the different railway stations in Afienya and Doryumu, in collaboration with the contractor, Afcons Limited.

John Peter Amewu stated his delight with the line's development, which is nearly 90% complete.

However, he stated that the COVID-19 epidemic has hampered the work, but that it is still on schedule to be finished by December 2022.

The Tema to Mpakadan Railway is part of the Ghana-Burkina Faso railway interconnection project, which is sponsored in part by the Ghanaian government and the Export-Import Bank of India.
