On Monday, June 13, 2022, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia broke the sod for the building of a 167-kilometer roadway from Tamale to Tatale in the Northern Region.
The enormous roadway is part of the Eastern Corridor route, which connects key towns in the Northern, North East, Upper East, Oti, Volta, and Greater Accra Regions. It has been untarred for decades under consecutive regimes.
The $150 million project, which will include the construction of schools, boreholes, and clinics in the project communities (Tamale, Mion, Yendi, Zabzugu, and Tatale), has been divided into two lots, with lot one being the 61.98-kilometer Tatale-Yendi road and lot two being the 106-kilometer Yendi-Tamale road.
Vice President Bawumia, speaking at the occasion, characterized the sod cutting as "historic" and a reflection of President Akufo-inclusive Addo's development ambition for everyone, particularly the North.
"We've come to see the historic sod-cutting for the Tatale-Yendi-Tamale road, which is part of the Eastern Corridor routes that connect Tema, Asikuma, Hohoe, Bimbilla, Yendi, Gushegu, Gbintiri, Bunkprugu, Garu, Bawku, and Polimakom," Dr. Bawumia remarked.
"Today's event is significant to us because it supports the government's efforts to achieve inclusive and balanced development in Northern Ghana, which was recognized as one of the poorest sections of the country in the 2014 Household Survey," he said.
"No government has attempted to tar this road in our country's history since independence, and today's sod cutting is a dream come true."
The World Bank has committed USD 150 million to the Tamale-Yendi-Tatale Road Project as part of the Transport Sector Improvement Project (TSIP).
As part of the project, an additional 670 km and 240 km of feeder roads will be repaired in the Upper West and Bono Regions, respectively, in addition to the 167 kilometer highway between Tatale and Tamale.
"It implies that 1,077 kilometers of roads will be renovated during the next two years as part of the Transport Sector Improvement Project. The major trunk road will be paved, while the feeder roads will mostly be gravel "Dr. Bawumia confirmed his identity.
The Transport Sector Improvement Project, according to the Vice President, was created to assist the development of road infrastructure, increase road safety, and strengthen the capacity of sector authorities.
