Commuters

Some commuters who talked with the Daily Graphic asked why proper traffic measures and alternate routes had not been created to alleviate the congestion, which they claimed would have a negative impact on productivity.

"We are not saying the work should not be done; nevertheless, there should have been appropriate public notice, as well as ample warning in, say, the Accra Mall area, to advise vehicles so that they may make other arrangements and avoid being trapped in this bottleneck."

"It's a Monday morning, and we all know how horrible the traffic is on Mondays, and how crucial this route is for many businesses and productivity," a caterer bemoaned as he prepared to serve food to an event.

"Given the significance of this route, these repairs should be completed at night to alleviate the burden on everyone." "Right now, we're stopped and have no choice but to wait till we can move since there's nothing else we can do," a driver explained.

Others questioned why a Bailey (steel) bridge was not built across the storm drains in the median along the stretch to provide commuters with convenient access to traffic.

Spintex, Beach Road

Some cars appeared to have changed their routes to the Accra-Tema Beach Road to avoid the severe traffic on the highway, which had practically to a standstill.

However, as if in synchrony, this move increased traffic along the road and its many by-passes, as drivers had to deal with the extra inconvenient of maneuvering around the Beach Road construction site.

From Tema, the slow-moving traffic began at Community 2, on the MPS road and other roads, and flowed into the common MPS Roundabout, where the network converged into the stretch leading to the Nungua Barrier, often referred Ghana as T-Junction.

With no MTTD officers to control traffic, chaos prevailed at the barrier intersection, which saw heavy traffic from all four sides, resulting in a survival-of-the-fittest situation.  With the beach road also undergoing construction, that route was little better, with the sole saving grace being that traffic was manageable.

The other alternate road, the Spintex Road linking Sakumono, saw a substantial amount of traffic as commuters sought for other options.
