The Minister for Armed Forces of the United Kingdom (UK), Mr. James Heappey, has arrived in Ghana as part of a three-nation tour to West Africa.
The Minister would visit Tamale and Accra in Ghana before travelling to Togo and the Ivory Coast, according to a statement from the British High Commission that was forwarded to the Ghana News Agency.
The Minister's visit to West Africa, according to the statement, demonstrated the UK's dedication to the long-term defence and security engagement with the area.
The announcement highlighted that Mr. Heappey arrived in Ghana while heads of state from the Commonwealth, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, gathered in Kigali, Rwanda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
It said that Rwanda will take over as Chair-in-Office from the UK.
The UK delivered more than £500 million in projects and programmes, according to the statement, in support of a future that is fairer, more prosperous, more sustainable, and more secure.
"The UK has a firmly global vision, and we recognise that sustained security comes from mutual support and commitment," Mr. Heappey said in a statement upon his arrival in Ghana.
"During my meetings here, I will inform trusted partners on what the UK is doing and what more we may do to co-operate and combat common challenges to our security and economy," the official website of the UK said.
According to the announcement, the Minister presented Lt Commander Priscilla Ami Dogbeda Dzokoto with the Dartmouth medal during his visit to Accra for finishing her basic naval training.
According to the report, Lt. Commander. Dzokoto, who assumed command of the Ghana Navy Ship BLIKA in April of this year, is the country's first female navy ship commander.
According to the report, the Minister visited Christiansborg Castle's Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F and took part in a discussion regarding the Accra Initiative there.
According to the release, Mr. Heappey met with three Northern Ghanaian ministers in Tamale: Mr. Saeed Mahazu Jibril, Savanna Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salish, Upper West Regional Minister, and Mr. Shani Alhassan Saibu, Northern Regional Minister.
According to the release, the Minister had lunch with three UK Chevening Alumni, during which they discussed their experiences with Chevening and the most recent "See You in Chevening" campaign.
According to the report, Commander Richard Walters, a non-resident defence attaché to Benin, the Ivory Coast, and Togo, and the UK's new defence adviser to Ghana, Mr. Heappey, were with him the whole time he was in West Africa.
Fantastic to have the UK's Minister for Armed Forces with us in West Africa this week, Commander Walters stated during the Minister's visit.
The significance and strength of the UK's defence cooperation with the area are well demonstrated by this.
