In a recent interview, Okyeame Kwame argued that the new school rappers in the industry are doing better than his colleagues who reigned at the time.
But famed rapper, Ex Doe, debunked that claim, noting that former rappers wrote “real rap.”
According to Ex Doe, its alumni defined rap and took it more seriously than the current generation of rappers who seem to make music “just for fun.”
In an interview with radio presenter Caleb Nii Boye, the ‘Maba’ hitmaker hinted that they were the ones who influenced most of the rappers who now rule the industry and not the other way around.
“For someone to say he’s better than us means that without us he couldn’t have come because he can’t be better than us. He can improve or do his own thing, which goes with his generation but not with ours. me, we used to do real rap music and now they do “more like fun”. So maybe Okyeame in his opinion could say they are better but I don’t buy into that. I think we were more serious, it’s just that we didn’t have the chance to come across this technology,” the ’80s rapper said.
His statement was in response to Okyeame Kwame, who in an interview with entertainment journalist Ibrahim Ben-Barko said: “These guys stand on the shoulders of giants like Reggie Rockstone, Lord Kenya; what people don’t know is that these young rappers are much better than us. Kwame Yogot and others. They are much better than us. »
Ex Doe, who expressed a contradictory opinion, however, credited his junior rappers for the good work and efforts in promoting Ghanaian rap music.
He added that these rappers mostly focused on puns versus the hard rapping that prevailed at the time.
“They are fine and what I can say is that they learned everything from us and as they grew up they started to listen to us. They learned from us. They are just as good and individually we all have opinions on how someone sounds.
“We were so good then. Content and lyrics, were very good. Rap is not just about putting words together. You have to make real sense out of it and I believe in our time we did that Look at Okyeame “Masan Aba” by Kwame, anyone can rap that… but now I see it like this, they (new rappers) are playing with words and it’s good for them. the generation we find ourselves in right now,” Ex Doe said in the interview.
