However, the most important innovation in European church architecture occurred in Italy between the end of the 14th century and the first quarter of the 16th century in the form of the Church Hall. Designed on the rising ridge of the Counter-Reformation, which well understood the importance of preaching in recapturing errant congregations, hall churches minimized the long space from entrance to altar, bringing the believer much closer to the action. This was achieved by the introduction of

pulpits in the middle of the nave and the addition of main side chapels in the middle where additional Masses could be celebrated simultaneously. The developed form of the hall church can be seen in Giacomo da Vignola's Gesù (1568, Rome).

Basilica and hall church plans dominated church building in Western Europe and America until the middle of the 20th century. The modernization of rituals in the Roman Catholic Church and the innovative spirit of many Protestant denominations are based on experimentation with new architectural forms. Designers have invented variations on the Greek cross plan or departed from traditional forms altogether.
