THE LARGEST CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN THE WORLD 2

In Constantinople, Anatolia, and Eastern Europe, where the Orthodox Church flourished, a plan known as the Greek Cross dominated church buildings. In contrast to the long, timber-roofed nave traversed at one end by a shorter transept, eastern churches had four equal wings radiating from a central, square, arched crossing area. A notable example is the Hagia Sophia (6th century AD) in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul).

The elaboration of Western Christian offices at the end of the 11th century was accompanied by an increasing complexity of the plan of the basilica. The chancel was usually defined to the east of the transept, but occasionally in the nave proper, as at Westminster Abbey. While in early basilica churches the clergy sat in the apse, they now occupied an area called the chancel (see there). Originally referring to the area just behind the cancelli, or rails, that separated the nave from the apse in

, the term choir now included that part of the church occupied by the altars, officiating clergy and singers. The term chorus is sometimes used interchangeably with chorus for this area.In France, the east end of the church was converted into a structure known as the chancel, fully developed in many 12th-century Romanesque churches. for example Notre-Dame-du-Port in Clermont-Ferrand, p. The term applies equally to an eastern termination composed of several apses, or to a single apse surrounded by an ambulatory and radiant chapel; it should place as many side altars as possible close to the main altar. The radiating chapels (see Chapel) were formerly odd in number

, the central one being dedicated to the Virgin Mary and known as the Lady Chapel (q.v.), a feature of French and English cathedrals.

Yamoussoukro, city and (de jure) capital, south-central Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), is located about 170 miles (274 km) northwest of the country's de facto capital, Abidjan. Although Yamoussoukro was officially named the new state capital in 1983, the transfer of government functions was slow and Abidjan remained the de facto capital into the 21st century.
