The Jammeh2Justice Ghana Coalition (J2J Ghana) has urged the Ghanaian government to get in touch with the Gambian government right away to start negotiations so that the West African migrants, including the more than 44 Ghanaians who were wrongfully killed in The Gambia in 2005, can receive the promised compensation.
The Gambian government accepted the TRRC's recommendations to pay the victims a sum of thirty-two million, four hundred thousand Dalasi (roughly $600,000) as compensation on May 25, 2022, following the TRRC's findings that former president Yahya Jammeh and 12 others under his command and control were accountable for the unlawful killing, torture, and enforced disappearances of over 50 West African migrants.
The respective governments of the victims' countries of origin were mandated to provide these compensation payments as quickly as practicable.
Since the publication of the white paper, the J2J Ghana Coalition, the families of the victims, and the survivors have called on the government of Ghana, which is legally required to receive the money for subsequent payment, to get in touch with them and publicly detail the steps it is taking to ensure that the Gambian government pays the victims' reparations.
Unfortunately, there hasn't been any interaction of this nature, and no action has been done. In this regard, we implore the Ghanaian government to make urgent contact with the relatives and survivors of the deaths.
The J2J Ghana Coalition is prepared to support the government in such engagement as it has maintained touch with the families and survivors of the victims.
We also restate our earlier demand that the $600,000 in compensation the Gambian government has promised for the 67 victims be considered woefully insufficient and that, if paid, it be regarded as a first payment toward the payment of additional and adequate compensation to the families and survivors of the victims.
J2J Ghana wants to urge the Ghanaian government to take up the possibility of holding extra talks with the Gambia's government in order to obtain sufficient and additional financial aid for the survivors and victims.
