Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Ashanti, has spoken out against the defeat of John Boadu, his favoured candidate for the party's general secretary position.

On July 18, Chairman Wontumi declared he was feeling well despite John Boadu's defeat in an interview with Angel FM.

The tycoon said that, of all the candidates he and his group backed for the party's national leadership posts, only John Boadu was the only one to lose.

In his analysis of the outcomes, he noted that both the candidates' victories and defeats were positive signs for democracy. In response to the particular question of how he felt about Boadu's passing, he said:

"I like it. I'm in a fantastic mood. We helped Stephen Ntim, and he succeeded. And [Rita] Asobayire triumphed. Also victorious was Abdul Aziz Haruna Futah. [For us] Seven persons won. Dr. China also triumphed. Only John Boadu was unable to win, but overall, it is excellent for democracy.

"John Boadu has extensive political experience. If you recall, in 2010 he unsuccessfully attempted to ascend to the position of National Organizer from his previous one as National Youth Organizer.

"Despite this, he supported the party and gave everything he had. Later, when he ran again, the party chose to nominate him National Organiser. He was victorious in this election. The NPP has triumphed." Prior to the NPP's national delegates meeting, Chairman Wontumi persuaded fourteen (14), other regional chairmen to support John Boadu over Justin Frimpong Kodua, a formidable opponent (JFK).

In a video posted to social media, the Ashanti Regional Chairman and the other 14 chairmen can be heard pleading with delegates to support John Boadu, the first candidate on the General Secretaryship ballot.

In a different video, Chairman Wontumi claimed that anyone who challenged the then-current General Secretary would be squandering their money.

However, John F. Kennedy won the election by garnering 2,857 votes to 2,524 for John Boadu.

Other victors on the day were the National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, Vice Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, Second Vice Chairman Rita Asobayire, Third Vice Chairman Alhaji Masawuud. National Nasara Coordinator Abdul Aziz Haruna Futah, National Youth Organiser Salam Mohammed Mustafa, National Women Organiser Kate Gyamfua, and Treasurer Dr. Charles Dwamena.
