Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially opened a 13-kilometer stretch of inner roads in the Ashanti region's Oforikrom Municipality. The initiatives are a part of the Greater Kumasi Inner Roads, a 100 km project that began in 2019 and is funded by Sino Hydro.
Despite being pleased with the improvements made to some of their roads, residents of the Oforikrom municipality urge the government to finish building other impassable ones. Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, vice president, claims that Greater Kumasi's inner roadways have undergone a significant makeover.
He claims that since 2017, 1,180 km of roads in Ashanti have been finished, according to figures from the Ghana Highways Authority. He stated that the Boankra Inland Port project will get underway this month and that Kumasi International Airport will open in September. Construction company "Contracta" was given the 100 km Greater Kumasi Inner road improvement project in 2019; it was finished this year. Construction of roadside drains, provision of culverts, earthworks, provision of base and sub-base, double surface dressing, and road line marking are all included in the project's scope.
The communities that get benefits also include Suame, Kwadaso, Bantama, and Manhyia. Most of the roads inside the Oforikrom Municipality were virgin roads which started from scratch.
Residents are happy with the upgrades, but they want the municipality's other impassable roads addressed. Abraham Kwame Antwi, the chief executive of the Oforikrom Municipality, praised the government for meeting its pledge to repair the infrastructure of 13 kilometres of inner roads.
He claims that there are other ongoing road projects in the municipality that will receive a significant face-lift. He urged the government to assist in fixing the municipality's other pitiful roadways.
Asantehene's representative, Professor Nana Mensah Bonsu, the Chief of Asante-Asakyire, expressed enthusiasm for the construction of roads.
However, he thought that in terms of infrastructure development, the NPP owed a debt to the Ashanti region. The minister for roads and highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta, urges local assemblies to uphold bylaws that aim to prevent damage to roadways.
