The principal attorney for kingpin of illicit mining (galamsey), Aisha Huang, has defended his choice to represent the troubled Chinese citizen.
Effah-Dartey, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, has come under fire from the public for providing legal counsel to Aisha Huang, although he maintains that his primary motivation for doing so is financial gain.
"People who are accusing me of being responsible for supporting Aisha Huang are speaking falsely," I said. Because I support a wife, kids, and grandkids, I only work to make ends meet. He is reported as saying, "I'm protecting Aisha Huang for my daily bread," in an article by Oyerepafmonline.com.
When asked if he would resign should the Akufo-Addo administration hire him, he responded, "Of sure, I will resign if government hires me to stop protecting Aisha Huang."
He further said "Every time you see me standing up for Aisha Huang, it means she has totally compensated me. I am currently being paid in full."
The attorney, who was worried about his client's access, said: "My main issue is that I have trouble reaching my client. I believe she isn't being treated fairly by the state."
He did, however, express confidence that the allegations brought against his client will be dropped since, in his opinion, there isn't enough evidence to support them. Background
Ms. Huang was accused in 2017 with violating Section 99 (1) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 by engaging in small-scale mining activities (Act 703).
She was also accused of violating Sections 59 and 99 (2) of the Minerals and Mining Act by providing mining support services without having a valid registration with the Minerals Commission, as well as of hiring unauthorized foreign workers (in breach of section 24 of the Immigration Act and regulation 18 of the Immigration Regulations).
However, her case was dropped, and she was sent back home. The state ended the case against her after her deportation. She, however, managed to return to the nation, which resulted in her latest detention. Aisha Huang and three other Chinese citizens were placed in detention last week after a judge ordered their remand to appear in court on allegations of illicit gold mining and trade.
The reason for her most recent arrest is related to unlawful mining.
