Former Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi has finally discussed Laryea Kingston's exclusion from the Black Stars roster for the 2006 World Cup.
Despite making a significant contribution to the team's qualification, the former Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak winger was not selected for the team when the nation made its debut at the Mundial in Germany.
In an interview, Mr. Nyantakyi disclosed that an FA official was charged with filing the appeal, but it wasn't completed in a timely manner, causing the midfielder to miss the competition.
According to Nyantakyi, Ghana appealed [Laryea Kingston's ban], but in reality, the appeal was filed after the deadline.
"Unfortunately, Laryea Kingston was suspended from the African Cup of Nations because of the red card she received in Egypt (AFCON). We did, but the filing was late. Yes, it was filed after its due date.
"Someone's carelessness at the time. I recall that the sanction [mail] was delivered to my hotel room in Port Said by Alex Asante, the GFA's deputy general secretary, he said.
"Since OB Amoah, the time's deputy sports minister, and I were sat together, I requested that he provide the item to a different official (name withheld).
"We moved on to focus on other things in the hopes that this would be resolved, but it was not. It had not been completed when we returned to look at it as a group. Laryea Kingston regrettably was prevented from travelling to the 2006 World Cup in that way.
Between 2002 and 2010, Laryea played a significant role with the Black Stars, making 41 appearances and tallying six goals.
The 41-year-old, however, was absent from the Ghanaian team in 2006 when the Black Stars made their debut at the World Cup because of a three-match suspension he had earned earlier that year during the AFCON.
As a result, he was unable to attend his nation's initial two group games at the World Cup and the Black Stars' last group encounter against Zimbabwe at the AFCON.
Laryea, who was also benched for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, recently acknowledged that it still bothers that he never played in a FIFA World Cup during his playing career.
