The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) funding should not be impacted or lowered in any way as Ghana pursues debt restructuring under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Program, according to a call from the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH).

The PSGH also urged that money be given to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) as soon as possible so that attempts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) are not excessively hampered by the current crisis and the public enjoys unrestricted access to healthcare.

In a statement issued by the PSGH and signed by its president, Pharm. Samuel Kow Donkoh, it was stated that "We call on the Ministry of Finance and Parliament to ensure this is done and done promptly."

The organisation stated that while it has taken note of the nation's economic crisis and the government's responses, "as a Society, our biggest concern is the healthcare of the people of Ghana, especially access to pharmaceutical care."

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which calls for the payment of all debts owed to suppliers of pharmaceutical products to healthcare facilities, was mentioned as the main source of financing for healthcare in Ghana by the group. This is done to prevent any disruptions in the country's supply of pharmaceuticals and other goods.

We admonish the government to make sure that pension funds are not impacted by the "haircuts" announced by the Hon. Finance Minister on December 4, 2022, so that beneficiaries of these funds can continue to receive their benefits.

Furthermore, "any amounts owing to depositors who were affected by the financial sector clean-up should be paid as promised and should not be influenced by haircuts.

The PSGH pledged to take "all necessary measures to ensure that government fully complies with requests and suggestions expressed in solidarity with the people of Ghana and all stakeholders," it continued.

The PSGH stated that despite economic challenges, the government must ensure access to healthcare, particularly for the weak and those with little money.
