44 impoverished tertiary students in Accra have received scholarships from the Youth Education and Awareness Society (YEAS), a non-governmental Islamic organisation that supports educational growth.
It is intended to help the gifted but financially strapped students who live in Abeka-Lapaz and the nearby areas partially cover their tuition costs and other tertiary education expenses.
The 44 beneficiaries, who are enrolled in universities, technical schools, nursing programmes, and teacher preparation programmes, also received educational materials and monetary grants totaling between GH3,000 and GH1,000 as part of the package.
The annual Educational Support Programme of YEAS, according to Sheikh Issah Ibrahim Adam, Director of YEAS, is also to promote academic performance among secondary students from underprivileged communities who are guaranteed of the NGO's support upon admittance into the tertiary level.
Because we believe that education is the key to a good life and sustainable development, we continue to invest in helping young people obtain a decent education.
In his welcome speech, Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, Operations Manager of YEAS, mentioned that the education assistance programme, which began by helping 8 students in 2018 with their studies, went on to support 15 students in 2019, 22 students in 2020, and 28 students in 2021.
He added that the programme is consistent with YEAS' humanitarian assistance for local communities and that the NGO, which has its main office in Agona Swedru in the Central area, rotates its annual educational support across towns to help impoverished students.
The beneficiaries were exhorted by Sheikh Amin Osman, General Secretary of the Coalition of Islamic Humanitarian Organizations of Ghana, to make the most of the scholarship funding by pursuing academic achievement.
He added that students must live within their means and focus on their study while advising tertiary students to stop borrowing money from friends and other sources for extravagant lifestyles and pointless purchases.
For her part, Madam Geraldine Ashitey, Tesano Branch Manager of Eco Bank, praised YEAS for the educational assistance intervention, believing that it would help the beneficiaries finish their courses considerably.
She advised the recipients to make the most of the financial aid and assured YEAS of the bank's ongoing involvement in promoting financial literacy among young people.
