Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has officially opened the Fire Academy and Training School in Accra as well as the infrastructural projects and operating vehicles for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

On Friday, December 23, 2022, Dr. Bawumia dedicated two two-storey dormitory buildings, a two-storey classroom building, and a dining hall for the Fire Academy and Training School.

The Vice President also gave the Ghana National Fire Service permission to employ a Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV), two hydraulic platforms, and two hydraulic platforms for operational purposes.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Bawumia noted that the facilities, which are entirely funded by the government, are a part of plans by the government to provide resources and assistance to the Ghana National Fire Service in order to help it carry out its mandate more effectively as well as equip the Fire Academy and Training School to rank among the best in all of Africa.

According to Dr. Bawumia, "in the coming years, government intends to make the Fire Academy and Training School Africa's best by providing training facilities like simulators, which include urban search and rescue simulators and firefighting simulators to help keep firefighters up to date with contemporary firefighting and rescue techniques.

As a long-term solution to some of the Ghana National Fire Service's delivery issues, the government is also contemplating the purchase of fire fighting and rescue helicopters.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the government has also purchased property in several regions of the nation through the Interior Ministry and the Fire Service Council in order to construct more training facilities for the convenience and efficient training of both current and future fire officers.

Regarding a boost in personnel for the Service, the Vice President remarked that since the NPP Government took office in 2017, the Ghana National Fire Service has been given authorization to hire more than 7,000 people to increase the Service's manpower strength.

This shows how hard the government is working to ensure that the Ghana National Fire Service has enough staff to expand its operations to include all of the country's districts, Dr. Bawumia remarked.

The Vice President exhorted Fire Service personnel to "stay consistent and devoted to your responsibility of saving lives and property" while cautioning the Service and students to take good care of the facilities.
