In order to safeguard the nation and its residents from an increase in Covid-19 instances, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has issued a number of guidelines, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has lent its support to them.

Chinese travellers "shall be compelled to undertake obligatory Covid-19 testing upon arrival at the Kotoka International Airport at no cost," according to GACL.

Passengers starting their journey in China would need to provide a valid negative Covid-19 PCR test result 48 hours before leaving the country of origin, the GACL continued.

In support of this attitude, the Ministry asked the general people to exercise caution when visiting China in a recent news statement.

Only "necessary journeys should be conducted till further notice," it added.

Since the removal of its strictest restrictions in November of last year, China has seen an increase in instances.

However, the most recent official statistics seem to indicate that there aren't many everyday new instances.

Due to a recent decrease in Covid testing, there are worries that these figures are understated.

On Sunday, the authorities only reported 2,097 daily new cases. According to epidemiologist Wu Zunyou, a second wave of illnesses will be brought on by widespread travel during the week-long Lunar New Year celebrations that start on January 21st. The present rise in infections is expected to last until mid-January. Typically, millions of people travel at this time to spend the holiday with their families.

He asserts that once individuals return to work after the break, there will be a third spike in cases from late February to mid-March.

As a result, some nations have announced additional entrance requirements for tourists from China, while others, like Italy and Japan, now need a positive test upon arrival.

Several nations, notably the United States, blamed the modification on China's lack of knowledge on genome sequencing and The Ghana Health Service reported that a fresh wave of COVID-19 infection is now present in Ghana as a result of the country's comparatively poor vaccination coverage.

In a press release dated January 1, 2023, the Service stated that it was taking the necessary actions to make sure the issue would not spiral out of control.

To prevent subsequent breakouts, the situation necessitates strengthening and revising current security measures. In cooperation with important stakeholders, the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health are closely monitoring the situation. The Director-General of GHS, Dr. Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, promised in the statement that "we will soon come up with our nation specific steps to address the current danger of COVID-19, especially with respect to importation."

The Ghana Airports Company (GAC) subsequently amended the Covid-19 regulations for travellers utilising the Kotoka International Airport.

The updated rules are valid starting on January 6, 2023, at 0:00. (UTC).
