According to a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), the management's decision to move male students from Mensah Sarbah Hall and continuing students from Commonwealth Hall will stand.
In order to safeguard lives and property on campus, Professor Ransford Gyampo stated the university administration was unwavering in its commitment to prevent additional altercations between the "rivalling" two halls.
Following a protest by the Old Vandals Association, former students of the Commonwealth Hall, against the relocation of the Hall's current students, Prof. Gyampo made this statement to the Ghana News Agency.
On January 3, 2022, a segment of the Old Vandals Association gathered in Commonwealth Hall of UG to express their displeasure with the university's administration about the relocation of continuing students.
According to Professor Gyampo, the University wouldn't just stand by while the two halls caused mayhem and calamity on campus.
The University will not accept behaviours that cause disturbance or violate human rights, he added, adding that students were free to hold their customary events in the halls.
He emphasised that the University of Ghana will not put up with any irrational sentimental connection to residential halls.
He claimed that the Old Vandals Association leadership had been informed and had already approved the decision, and that the association's demonstrators at the hall were just there to cause trouble.
All enrolled students in Commonwealth Hall and all enrolled male students in Mensah Sarbah Hall had received warnings from the University of Ghana Council not to return to their respective residence halls or any of the traditional halls.
The students will be assigned at random to any vacant rooms in either the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited or private hostels.
The directions wouldn't affect current female students in Mensah Sarbah Hall or students with special needs in any hall, according to the council.
The modifications were necessary as a result of several incidents of violence involving students from both halls.
