In an effort to localise operations, the Ghana Gas Company Limited has reportedly hired local engineers to run its Atuabo Plant in place of Chinese expats, according to the company's managing director.
According to Dr. Ben Asante, this decision reduced the company's monthly running expenses by almost $3 million.
On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, he revealed it during his turn at the State of the Agencies Report, a forum for press engagement developed by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) in association with the Information Ministry.
"Ghana Gas had a period of infrastructure expansion following incorporation in July of 2011. We had completed what we refer to as mechanical completion at the end of November 2014.
After that, we proceeded through a commissioning phase that lasted for about six months. As a result, by the end of April 2015, both our plant and the pipes that served it were completely operational. The Chinese have been running the plant for all of this time.
We enjoy working with the Chinese, but we didn't want to collaborate with them for an extended period of time. The management of this plant was turned over to local engineers and personnel.
"In the 31 years I've spent working in this field, this is the first time I've witnessed such a shift, with foreign operators ceding operatorship to local engineers and technicians in just three years.
Since we pay the Chinese that much each month, we also save $3 million while we're at it, he added.
In addition to the company's push for indigenization, Dr. Asante said his organisation has over the years contributed to creating a highly skilled and motivated workforce full of local engineers and technicians capable of sustaining the petrochemical industry and playing a crucial role in accelerating the growth of Ghana's economy.
He stated that by implementing the top technology and technical management techniques to guarantee the availability of its resources to the service of the public, Ghana Gas is ready to establish itself as a dependable supplier of lean gas, condensate, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
