A new building for the Police Service will be completed in the second week of February 2023, according to Benito Owusu-Bio, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
After touring the 504 one and two-bedroom homes being built for the Service, he said this.
On January 12, 2023, the Deputy Minister visited Kwabenya (Atomic) as part of a working tour to view the continuing housing project for employees of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Meteorological Service, Civil Aviation, and the DVLA.
Speaking to the media, Benito Owusu-Bio revealed that the Unique Development Company project is the result of a land swap agreement between the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, Lands Commission, Ministry of Interior, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and the private developer.
He said that the government came to this arrangement after realising the Police Service's urgent need for housing, which was in keeping with the government's intention to construct contemporary barracks for the security services as their numbers were rising by the day.
Construction on the project, he said, started in 2020 but was stalled and nearly stopped by the COVID-19 epidemic. He said they aim to see the finished product by February 2023.
The Deputy Minister added that the project also includes a 10-unit, 2-bedroom housing complex with offices, canteens, and a Police post to safeguard the safety of the Service's engineering and mechanic department.
According to Mr. Owusu-Bio, the police station in the new neighbourhood would not only serve the Police Service and their families but also others living nearby.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted that the Jubilee enclave's occupants from the Ghana Airports Company and the Meteorological Service had been moved to make room for the Jubilee City Project's construction.
In order to demonstrate the difference in viewpoint and the superior facilities the government is providing the Police Service, the Deputy Minister also gave the journalists a tour of the old Police Service lodging facilities at the Airport, 37 DVLA enclave.
He said, "Work is well advanced and we are confident that the contractors will reach the deadline," expressing his happiness at the pace of the work completed so far.
In addition to 312 dwelling units, the project's first phase also includes a fully equipped clinic, a school building for JHS and Primary students, a police station, a mobile maintenance unit for the police, a fuel depot, and a garage.
A total of 192 housing units will be built during the second phase, bringing the overall amount to 504 dwelling units.
On this working tour, the Deputy Minister was accompanied by the Advisor to the Minister of Mines, Maxwell Adu-Nsarfoa, the Technical Director for Lands at the Ministry, as well as other representatives from the Ministry and the Lands Commission.
