The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Greater Accra Constituency Chairman Caucus is requesting an early congress to choose a new flagbearer.
The Caucus claims that this will provide the party the chance to promote the chosen flagbearer effectively.
The organisation claims it disagrees with the party's choice to push out the elections until early in the next year.
The group convened on January 17 at Susuana Lodge in Labone, Accra, according to sources for MyJoyOnline.com, to confirm their choice.
"We disagree with the party's proposed course of action. In reality, the General Secretary favours an early Congress, but we don't understand why the system is working against it.
One of the constituency chairmen told Myjoyonline, under the condition of anonymity, "We need time to promote the flagbearer to Ghanaians and we can't afford to not break the eight."
In the sake of the party and all Ghanaians, he continued, "We fervently desire that the leadership take our request into consideration. That is all we are requesting.
Eugene Boakye Antwi, the member of parliament for Subin, has also issued a similar plea.
He claims that choosing the flagbearer early gives both the party and the person time to be ready for the key election in 2024.
"Based on my experience, I believe we should conduct the super delegates' conference as early as possible, perhaps next spring, in March, to give them four to five months to campaign across the nation. We vote for both the parliamentary and presidential elections in August to get it over with while Parliament is on break like this.
The most crucial factor is that we must consider the party. In 2024, Akufo-Addo won't be running for office, therefore we should choose whomever the candidate is at that time to support the president throughout all of his regional trips, he had previously stated in an interview with JoyNews.
The party has not yet released the rules for choosing the candidate to lead the NPP in the next election.
A number of prominent party figures, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen, and former Minister of Agriculture Dr. Afriyie Akoto, have declared their candidature for the role of flagbearer.
