The Attorney General's office is actively pursuing settlement discussions just 24 hours after asserting that journalist Latif Idrissu was not touched by any police officer.
Nancy Rita Twumasi Asiamah, the state's attorney, pleaded with the judge to halt the case.
"My lady, I have been told to request a break. We have written to the police to urge them to settle, as we stated on Monday.
"I have been asked to kindly ask for an adjournment while we pursue that since we have not yet received an answer. I'm begging you," she said.
Trial judge Justice Cynthia Wiredu expressed her displeasure by pointing out that the matter has been pending since 2019 and that previous settlement attempts have failed.
"Parties even resolve disputes following rulings. You had the chance to compromise but chose not to. That you are pursuing this does not exclude me from carrying out my duties.
"I have stuff to do, and you have your orders. Is it to postpone court? Can the trial go on? We can review any settlement whenever one occurs, the court stated.
Samson Lardi Anyenini, the attorney representing the journalist and The Multimedia Group, told the court that his client's side was open to the notion of a settlement.
But the fact that the matter had been unnecessarily postponed worried him.
Respectfully, the plaintiffs have been open to settlement, as we told the court yesterday. We just desire for that to occur once. "Considering the considerable delay in filing the lawsuit. While the first plaintiff, in particular, is still responsible for paying for medical care in Ghana and the United States," he said.
Justice Wiredu pleaded with both parties to continue the settlement negotiations without adopting fixed stances.
At this time, Mr. Anyenini drew attention to several remarks made by the police that were troubling.
He cited court records in which the police stated that the journalist who had been attacked was not experiencing any issues.
"They insist that nothing has happened even in the face of abundant medical proof. Such stances are ineffective, he said.
Justice Wiredu instructed the police to, if required, take into consideration hiring an outside examiner.
She emphasised that reaching a resolution is always ideal. March 16, 2023 has been set aside for the case.
