Professor Edward Appiah, the director general of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), has urged young people in Ghana to be persistent and resilient in their pursuit of achievement.
Prof. Edward Appiah discussed the value of tenacity and sacrifice for young people seeking achievement in a recent conversation with Rev. Erskine for the Y Leaderboard Series.
He said that success does not come lightly in life and that perseverance and hard effort are required.
Things don't always come in perfect packages. You have to work for what you desire, and it won't come easily. It's always worth it to work hard to achieve your goals, he remarked.
Mr. Appiah talked about his experience in South Africa as a student and how he worked hard to achieve, even at the cost of his social life.
He said that his sole goal was completing his studies programme on time.
Nevertheless, despite his best efforts, he had a significant setback when he lost his sister, which caused him to miss the program's completion date by four months.
"I didn't have a social life when I was in school in South Africa, and we all know how much of a party culture exists there. Once, when I was nowhere to be found, my friends called and were shocked to learn that I was still in class on a Friday at 5:30.
"I had left my family in Ghana and was just focused on finishing on time. I set a task for myself to complete it. I must admit that I didn't complete the task in exactly three years; it took me an extra four months since I lost my sister just as I was finishing. My younger brother, who also died young, and my sister, who also passed away at the time, were the three of us. I received the news from my wife while I was in Liverpool for a conference. In order to delay finishing my programme, I travelled to Ghana and lived there for many months.
Success, according to the NaCCA Director General, is not just about achieving a goal but also about the path one takes to get there. Young people should challenge themselves, put up the effort, and not be scared of the challenges they may face along the path, he said.
