As the globe observes the International Day of Women and Girls in Science today, African women are resolutely assuming their proper position in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with the assistance of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA).
According to a World Bank article on the issue, "the essential necessity of scientific and technology competence is more clear than ever in an age of expanding digitalization, climate change worries, and health catastrophes like as the Covid-19 epidemic."
Advanced scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians are essential to pushing humanity into new frontiers and addressing pressing issues. However, women's potential has repeatedly been underutilised in this area.
Only 30% of science professionals in sub-Saharan Africa are women, according to the authors. Research has identified a number of factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women in STEM, including harmful stereotypes about women and girls' aptitude for STEM fields, prejudice against women in the workplace and in schools, and traditional gender roles that disproportionately place domestic responsibilities on women's shoulders, leaving them with less time to work in labs, attend conferences, and form networks.
Eliminating these obstacles will help close the gender achievement gap and provide women an equal opportunity to thrive in STEM fields.
Flora Jika, the managing director of CCBA's Voltic (GH) Ltd., stated that the organisation was dedicated to doing its share to support the progress of women in the sciences.
"We want to empower women and girls throughout our markets on the continent because women are essential to our continent's shared prosperity," Jika added.
"Across the value chain, our goal is to increase shared opportunity for our business and the communities we serve. Opportunity is about a brighter future for individuals and their communities everywhere on the African continent, not simply about money.
In order to have a greater influence on the lives of women and children in the areas where it operates, Voltic (GH) Limited has collaborated with the Girls Excellence Movement (GEM) in Ghana. GEM is a group of vibrant young professionals from Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, the United States, and the United Kingdom who give their talents, time, and other resources to offer carefully selected capacity-building programmes for girls.
The mission of GEM is to mentor, enlighten, educate, and encourage girls to become change leaders. It helps girls become exceptional, self-sufficient, self-assured, knowledgeable, and brave women who are prepared and eager to assume leadership roles in all aspects of life, particularly in jobs in the STEM disciplines.
In accordance with the agreement, GEM and Voltic planned their first Inspiration-On-Wheels outreach in 2022 for Comboni Technical Vocational Institute (COMBOTECH) in Ghana's Volta Region, which is located in Sogakope.
Menstrual health, women's online rights, STEM fields and jobs, sexual assault awareness, and successful mentor engagement were just a few of the themes discussed throughout the event. Additionally, free sanitary pads and math sets were distributed to the girls.
