When the House reconvened for the year on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin sent a letter from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the members as one of the first things he did.
Kobina Tahiru Hammond and Stephen Amoah were named as the minister of trade and industry and his deputy, respectively, in the letter that announced the significant changes the president had made to his cabinet.
According to the president's letter to Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin, it had become necessary as a result of the resignations of three of his ministers within the previous month.
The Speaker of Parliament offered his congratulations to the members with the announcements, which also included the selections of Osei Bonsu Amoah as Minister of Food and Agriculture and Stephen Asamoah Boateng as Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
He did so because every new appointment was a member of the legislature.
The Speaker, however, had more to say when he wished the all-male appointments success as they went through the screening procedures before being confirmed or rejected by parliament.
After being interrupted a few times while reading the letter from President Nana Akufo-Addo to the House, Alban Bagbin claimed that judging by how enthusiastic the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs in the Minority were, it was likely that they would quickly approve the nominations of these candidates.
Respected colleagues, I hereby send this message to the Appointments Committee for review and a report to the House. I would like to congratulate the members of parliament who have earned His Excellency's high regard and have been granted the chance to pass this House's vetting on their election.
"I'm hoping you all succeed. Although it's just a wish, the Minority's greater celebration than the Majority suggests that You could succeed, he replied.
The Minority in Parliament is notorious for being extremely harsh with presidential nominees who come before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament believes that this scenario, especially with this new group of appointments, has the potential to change.
It's also important to note that many Ghanaians, including MPs, have recently urged Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to make significant changes to his administration.
The president has been under pressure to announce a reshuffle of his appointments for a variety of reasons, one of which being the fact that he has not made any significant changes to his cabinet since assuming office in January 2017.
