On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, the Vice President of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area led a team to inform President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the tragic passing of Prof. Tuntumba Bore Essa I, the Overlord of Gonja Yagbonwura.
The Overlord passed away on February 5, 2023, at around two in the morning at the Jakpa Palace in Damongo, according to the Buipewra, who also noted that, by Gonja custom and tradition, the King of the Gonja Land was buried on February 6, 2023, at the Royal Mausoleum at Mankuma in the Bole district of the Savannah Region.
According to him, the Gonja Kingdom has a solid track record of establishing a chieftaincy succession system by custom and tradition, particularly when it comes to Yagbon skin.
The Buipewura promised President Akufo-Addo that the selection of a new Yagbonwura will proceed without incident and in harmony.
He praised some of the late King's excellent deeds, adding "His Majesty spent his whole life working for local governments and the institution of the chieftaincy. He was one of the three EMINENT CHIEFS who brought Dagbon long-lasting peace. In all facets of his life, His Majesty was a father to everybody and a peace-loving OVERLORD."
President Akufo-Addo was formally invited by Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor to the 7th DAY ADUA of the late Overlord of Gonja, which is scheduled to take place on February 25 and 26 at the Jakpa Palace. "Mr. President, we look forward to your visit on February 26th as you join the Savannah Region's residents in mourning our late Overlord,"
The President of the Republic, for his part, gave the King and his delegation assurances that he would attend the burial and offered the family and the Gonja Kingdom his sincere sympathies, saying that the entire nation was in grief with the Chiefs and the residents of the Savannah Area.
