Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, has asked the country's educational institutions to impart to the young people the values and principles of democracy so that they will be loyal citizens and uphold it.

To secure the support of the Ghanaian people in carrying out its mandate, he also wants institutions of government to increase citizens' knowledge of the role of Parliament.

During the opening of the House's 30th-anniversary celebration of parliamentary democracy, the Majority Leader declared in Parliament that Parliament had already started stepping up its public engagement to become more accessible to the general public.

He asserts that the Ghanaian Parliament is Sub-Saharan Africa's top-ranked open legislature.

The purpose of Parliament and the duties of Members of Parliament, such as representation, debate, information sharing, legislation, and budgetary oversight To disabuse the minds of our public that Members of Parliament (MPs) may do anything under the sun, he remarked, "(power-of-purse), supervision, and confirmation of agreements, including loans, must be regularly highlighted and clarified."

In contrast to members who would enter Parliament with the sole purpose of utilizing Parliament as a stepping stone to reach the executive, he claimed that this would unquestionably support the growth of career MPs.

While we're at it, it's crucial to acknowledge that some of the shortcomings in our performance can be attributed to self-imposed restrictions included in our standing orders. We've been working on a review procedure for more than 20 years, he said.

According to him, now is the appropriate moment to wrap up the review process as Parliament marks 30 years in existence.

While Ghana has only had parliamentary democracy for 30 years, compared to countries like the United Kingdom and the United States of America, which have had democracy for nearly 200 years, he claimed that it is still important to halt, reflect, and rejoice.

He asserted that if Ghanaians continued to assert that the motives, real or imagined, for which military juntas intervened in the country's administration had been totally removed, they would be behaving like ostriches.

We also cannot say that the goals we set for ourselves in the 1992 Constitution have been fully attained, he said.

He continued, "Our country, 30 years into the 4th Republic, is still grappling with issues of poverty, youth unemployment, chieftaincy conflicts, economic hardships, vigilantism, insecurity in all its forms, and corruption in public life." Despite this, he claimed that the country has made significant progress.
