Leading opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) figure Rojo Mettle Nunoo has spoken out about the controversial "tea without biscuits" gift he received from the Election Commission (EC) before the general elections of 2020.
At the EC strongroom, also known as the presidential collation center, Rojo represented the NDC and defended the interests of the party and its candidate John Dramani Mahama.
Rojo was one of three witnesses who ascended the box when Mahama appealed the election results to the Supreme Court.
In his evidence, he admitted drinking tea when he went to the EC chairperson's office to meet with her to discuss certain issues the NDC had.
In response to the question of whether he had any regrets about sipping tea while on duty for a key task at the EC, he said on Citi FM (February 24) that others were really offered substantial meals.
You mentioned Atta Mills was drinking tea, but Atta Mills usually drank coffee, therefore I will always drink tea. You are now claiming that Rojo went to the EC to get some tea. They were providing waakye, jollof, and other food to other folks.
"You didn't inquire as to whether they were also consuming jollof and waakye? I sipped tea, and I brought my own tea bag and merely water from the EC, he said.
Rojo stated again that he had seen Jean Mensah, who was consulting outside of her office, and that Kpessa-Whyte was in the strongroom when he was there.
"Go and find out. They offered me waakye and jollof, and I offered mine to the security services that were present. I never ate any of it. I wasn't on a frolic; I just went and had tea in the waiting area to see Jean Mensah," he insisted.
Due to illness, Rojo came before the Supreme Court via video conference as a witness for an election petition.
The case was denied by the court in a majority decision, allowing Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to complete his second and last term, which ends in 2018.
Before the 2024 elections, Mahama has been predicted to be the NDC's flagbearer, with former finance minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor as one of his key rivals.
One of the primary players on the Duffuor campaign staff is named Rojo.
