Ernest Henry Norgbey, the member of parliament for Ashaiman, has provided details of what transpired in the town when military soldiers invaded and brutalised locals over the suspected murder of one of their own.
According to Ernest Henry Norgbey, he received a call at three in the morning informing him that military forces had entered the area and were brutalising defenceless civilians going about their normal business.
Although not knowing the precise cause of the invasion, he said, the soldiers were retaliating after one military member was killed nearby on Saturday morning, according to intelligence that has reached him.
Speaking in an interview with Ghanaweb's Nimatu Yakubu Atouyese, he remarked;
"I was just in the house around 3:30 in the morning regarding some military invasion in the Official Town enclave of Ashaiman, and according to the sources they were just brutalising the innocent citizens; people going about their daily tasks; people who would want to go to work early in the morning. For reasons best known to them, they were just brutalising them to keep them from leaving their homes. But, the target that we have chosen is the innocent populace as retaliation for the Saturday morning murder of one of their own.
The MP said that in an effort to diffuse the issue, he had contacted the deputy defence minister, who had reassured him that the guys were safe.
The constable defence minister promised me that things will calm down quickly as we talk: "As we speak, we made urgent measures to get the authorities engaged to summon the guys back to the barracks. I can see some indications that these armed men are leaving the area.
I reside in Ashaiman official town so I know what is going, and I am in the neighbourhood right now, he continued.
Once military soldiers invaded Ashaiman and brutalised locals, videos of the atrocities on certain people went viral on social media.
In a few of these recordings, staff members can be seen brutally beating individuals who were outside of their rooms in the early morning hours.
The tragedy occurred early on March 7, 2023, in Official Town, Ashaiman, amid a significant downpour.
According to reports, people have been ordered to remain in their rooms until the situation is under control.
The neighborhood's streets are largely deserted.
