To maintain effective and efficient policing across the nation, the Police Administration has established seven new police regional commands.
The new regions include two each in the Ashanti and Eastern regions, as well as one more Regional Police Command in each of the Volta, Western, and Central regions.
The names of the regions are the Ashanti North and Ashanti South Police regions in the Ashanti Region and the Eastern North and Eastern South region in the Eastern Region, according to Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who revealed this in an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday.
The remaining regions are the Central North Region, the Western Central Region, and the Volta North Region in the Volta Region. According to the IGP, the purpose of creating new areas was to bring law enforcement closer to the public.
He said that subdividing the current areas into smaller ones would guarantee that all communities would be served by cops and law enforcement.
Background
With the addition of the seven additional police areas, there are now 25 Police National Administrative regions.
Every new region is operating efficiently.
The youngest police region was Tema, which was created out of Accra in 1966, before the Central East Police Region (Kasoa and surrounding communities), which was created out of the Greater Accra and the Central regions in August of last year, and the regional commands for the six newly created regions in the nation.
