On Tuesday, certain Ghanaians who have excelled throughout the years in their many sectors of national endeavour were honoured and given medals for their excellent services, grit, perseverance, and contribution to national progress.

The awards, were dominated by workers in the health sector and their leaders who were in the vanguard of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as individuals and groups who supported the fight.

For their achievements and sacrifices on behalf of the nation, 47 national heroes in various fields received the Order of the Volta. According to the event brochure, 19,557 frontline health workers were also honoured for their contributions across the nation.

Event

The beneficiaries were filled with pride as they arrived enthusiastic and excited and took in the welcoming environment at the Accra International Convention Centre, which was decorated in the colours of the country.

The occasion drew numerous dignitaries, including the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, and the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, in addition to the award recipients and their families who were present to show support.

The Volta Order

Under the Order of the Volta, 47 Ghanaians received medals and sashes in three categories.

Members of the National COVID-19 Task Force, trustees of the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund, and the group responsible for presenting and winning Ghana's case against Cote d'Ivoire before the International Tribunal for the Laws of the Sea were among those present.

Another was Veronica Bekoe, the creator of the Veronica Bucket, which was used and praised all over the world for hand washing. She was given an individual award, the Order of the Volta, Companion.

The other recipients of the Order of the Volta were Dr. Veronica Agartha Martinson, a crop scientist, Prof. Johnson Kwasi Wiredu, the first Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, and Prof. Akwasi Osei. Margaret Sarpong Darkwah was Ghana's first female police commissioner.

The COVID-19 Private Sector Fund (Support Team), institutions, faith-based organisations (FBOs), hand sanitizer and personal protective equipment (PPE) makers, COVID-19 National Trust Fund donors, and overseas allies in the fight against the COVID-19 were also recognised with awards.

Rationale

In a speech prior to delivering the awards, President Akufo-Addo stated that they were organised exclusively for the honorees whose labour and contribution had benefited the nation and were strictly a national event free of party, ethnic, or religious influences.

He described the challenging circumstances and the all-encompassing plan the government adopted to ensure the priority, health, and safety of the Ghanaian people in order to justify the honours given to those who gave their all during the COVID-19 pandemic.
