A similar tragedy nearly happened at this year's celebration at the Volta Regional Youth Resource Center at Adaklu-Tsrefe, close to Ho, eleven years after 14-year-old student Etornam Gorni Attipoe passed away during a march past practice at the Ho Jubilee Park.
This time, at approximately 1 p.m., a 15-year-old girl who was watching the event from a well-known stand suddenly passed out in the scorching sun.
Dr. Emmanuel Amaglo, a member of the medical staff at the event, saved the girl's life by rescuing her from the stand, carrying her to the medical shed, and reviving her after a grueling 30-minute cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
To manually maintain intact brain function until additional steps are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in a state of cardiac arrest, CPR is an emergency procedure that consists of chest compressions frequently combined with artificial ventilation.
Discharged
The feeble and pallid child was brought to the Ho Teaching Hospital after being revived, where she was treated and ultimately released.
Dr. Amaglo explained to the Daily Graphic that the girl suffered from extreme dehydration as a result of the hot weather and lost a lot of blood during her monthly cycle.
The girl, whose identity is being suppressed, was not initially recognized as a student at the Ho Municipality's second-cycle institution.
The child arrived at the location extremely early in the morning, "possibly without food," claims Dr. Amaglo.
Teams from the Red Cross and National Guard were also present during the 66th Independence Day celebration at Adaklu-Tsrefe in addition to the medical teams from Accra and Ho.
Many onlookers and employees of the security agencies who collapsed during the celebration were quickly given first aid by the ambulance service.
A soldier was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for treatment days before the celebration after he fell from one of the driving military trucks during a practice at the Regional Youth Resource Center.
2012 event
On February 27, 2012, while walking with her colleagues at a practice before March 6, Etornam Gorni Attipoe of the SDA Basic School in Ho passed out a few yards from the podium.
She was taken to the hospital and later declared dead.
The Independence Day event in Ho Jubilee Park last year, which celebrated 10 years since the tragedy, was organized specifically in honor of the late Etornam Gorni Attipoe and was marked by intense emotion.
Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the regional minister, later turned the first sod for the memorial honoring the daughter.
