In order to ease the burden of the nation's present economic difficulties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take immediate action to reduce the size of his government.
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC's national chairman, gave what the party referred to as "the actual status of the nation" talk during an event yesterday at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPAS). He claimed that the government's current size was proof that it was wasting its limited resources.
He accused the President of appointing people to roles such as young ambassador for diaspora relations, policy associate, and chief executive of the public sector, among roughly 20 other absurd and unnecessary appointments.
among others, the manager of church relations and overseer of the National Cathedral
NDC members and executives, as well as previous government officials, including Felix Ofosu Kwakye, Sylvester Mensah, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, an aspirant to be the NDC's flag bearer and a former minister of finance, graciously attended the two-hour event.
It was held in response to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's speech on the state of the nation, which he delivered to Parliament in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution around two weeks earlier.
management crisis
According to Mr. Nketiah, who was laying out the issues at hand, the president "desperately sought to put a cheerful spin on a very dire national situation," which is why the NDC decided to submit to the public what it saw as the country's actual condition.
He claimed that the current status of our country is defined by hopelessness, irresponsibility, corruption, and leadership paralysis.
He claimed that, among other things, the true state of the country was one in which measles outbreaks were caused by a lack of childhood vaccines, a draconian debt restructuring program was implemented for the first time in our history, pensioner bondholders were compelled to participate in a historic public protest by picketing at the Ministry of Finance, and a cruel financial haircut had never before been envisioned.
These, he claimed, had been accepted characteristics of this careless government.
"The genuine state of the nation is when a ball of kenkey, which in December 2016 sold for between 50 pesewas and GHC 1.00, is currently going for GHC 4.00 to GHC 5.00. The actual state of Ghana is that, as of February 2023, a bag of corn that cost GH$170.00 in 2016 is currently being sold for GH$900.00. "When a bag of Gino rice (5 kg), which was formerly sold for GHC25.00 in December 2016, is now going for GHC185.00, that is when you know the genuine state of the nation," he said.
Corruption
Speaking about corruption, the NDC National Chairman remarked that it was loud that the President remained silent during his presentation.
It was as loud as his guilt. Apparently, corruption has brought down the administration of his family and friends. President Akufo-Addo has transformed himself into a "Corruption Clearing Agent," ever-willing to exonerate himself and any of his appointees who engage in corruption, even before investigation procedures begin, Mr. Nketiah stated. Instead of addressing this canker head-on, he has done so.
"The President's actions and complicity have emboldened many of his officials, not least the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whose name has surfaced in multiple corruption scandals such as the PDS scandal, the dubious Gold-for-Oil deal, the stolen rice scandal, and the 'Appearance Fee Scandal,'" he continued.
