John Mahama, a former president of Ghana, submitted his nomination papers for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag-bearer election on Tuesday.
A month after selecting the nomination form, Professor Joshua Alabi, Mr. Mahama's campaign manager for the 2020 elections, organized a team to deliver the completed forms to the party's headquarters in Accra on his behalf.
Party leaders included Peter Boamah Otokunor, the former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, and others who accompanied him.
The completed nomination documents were delivered to the party's general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, indicating that the former president had overcome that obstacle.
Members of the election management committee, including Kakra Essamuah, the party's communications director, surrounded him.
charged environment
The roads leading to the NDC party headquarters in Adabraka were blocked about an hour before the former president was expected to submit his nomination.
To reroute traffic and keep everything in order, police officers were placed in key areas.
Several hundred party members gathered in front of the headquarters while singing, shouting, and dancing to NDC songs.
Within the headquarters, there was a frenzied scene as a huge crowd fought its way into the conference room where the election management committee was waiting to collect the completed nomination papers.
The atmosphere was electric with the throng yelling their heads off as Prof. Joshua Alabi, the former President's campaign manager for the 2020 election, came.
They chanted phrases like "Mu y3 y3 y3, JM beba," which means "JM will arrive rain or shine."
The General Secretary, who was accompanied by the election management team, examined the nomination forms and certified the paperwork before accepting them, demonstrating that the former President had overcome that challenge.
My best bet is JM
Prof. Alabi assured the media that the former President will win the primaries by 99% shortly after the forms were turned in.
"If JM gets 51%, he's won; if he gets 60%, he's won; if he gets 70%, he's won; if he gets 80 or 90%, he's won; but we want 99.9% to send a strong signal to our political rivals that our party is firmly unified behind JM," he stated.
He urged all party members to support the former president since he had a chance to win the election in 2024.
As the 2024 election will not be won on a silver platter, according to Prof. Alabi, the party needs to rally around its strongest candidate to win the popular vote and create the next administration.
He urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to make sure the election was fair and transparent.
"We won't allow anyone to cheat us too because we don't want to cheat our way into power. We are urging the EC to deal with all parties fairly and without pitting one side against the other. What we ask for is a level playing pitch for everyone "He was tense.
