Over the first five months of operation, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) monitoring teams had recovered more than GH86 million for the government.
The teams that monitor the market for compliance include the Tema team, situated in Tema Port; the Eastern Frontier team, based in Dabala in the Volta Region; the Western Frontier team, based in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region; and the Vehicle Task Force, which operates on a national scale.
In addition, between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the end of February 2023, their activity resulted in the interception and detention of 273 uncustomized automobiles.
Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah, the GRA's Commissioner of Customs, explained the plan to the media in Accra, saying that the seizures achieved by the team will help the state's push for income and assure that the nation's security is unharmed.
Background
The monitoring team program was developed by the Customs Division of the GRA to make sure importers pay the appropriate amounts of duty and to act as a tool to stop smuggling across the nation.
Four monitoring teams were established in October 2022 to conduct risk-based and intelligence-driven actions around the nation.
The teams also took on other related tasks, such as intercepting items thought to be Indian hemp, and some uncustomed commodities were also detained.
A review of the teams' actions between October 2022 and February 2023, according to the GRA's Customs Division, revealed that the teams had a considerable influence on revenue mobilization.
Without giving in
Mr. Iddisah provided a breakdown of the funds recovered for the state, stating that the Tema team alone collected GH85,000,000 and the Western Frontier team also recovered a total of GH1.46,000,000.
Throughout January and February of 2023, the Vehicle Task Force arrested 80 automobiles and apprehended 193 uncustomized vehicles.
The surveillance teams were an additional layer of protection put in place by the Authority, according to Mr. Iddisah.
The monitoring squad, according to the commissioner of customs, is another layer of enforcement since it operates in key locations to make sure that "if someone is able to dodge from the entrance ports, these teams will be able to catch them."
The Tema team alone has collected almost GH85 million and seized other commodities that did not satisfy the criteria necessary for the country since it was "established around the later part of last year to February," he said, commending the teams for their accomplishments.
The commissioner of customs warned that there was no room for compromise in the way the teams operated and stated that they would not tolerate any importer or trader acting unethically or in violation of the regulations governing customs in the nation.
