On a live broadcast, an argument over Ghana's anti-LGBTQI bill broke out between Professor Emerita Takyiwaa Manuh of the concerned Ghanaian Citizens Opposing the Passage of the Anti-gay Bill and Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, Moses Foh-Amoaning.
Opponents have called the measure, officially known as the Appropriate Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, "horrible" and "hate promoting," while advocates contend that it is important to address problems related to homosexuality in the nation.
At times, the discussion became contentious as personal matters were raised and Prof. Manuh urged lawmakers to enforce or reform current anti-homosexuality legislation instead.
The GTV Morning Show caller Mr. Foh-Amoaning, who was not present in the studio, took specific issue with the erudite Professor's remarks that seemed to cast doubt on his legal credentials.
Prof. Manuh then clarified that she was actually talking about Dr. Justice Appiah Kubi, a Coalition member who was present in the studio to challenge her.
"I shall ignore your unnecessary insults, Dr. Appiah-Kubi. I'm startled to learn that you are not a lawyer because Mr. Foh-Amoaning is my junior at the bar. For you to claim that I haven't read the law is a really terrible piece of legislation "She said. Being her junior at the time Mr. Foh-Amoaning was asked to contribute to the project, he said
"She claims that I am her junior, but what does it matter? It's okay that I wouldn't have replied to this. If 34 years ago at the bar doesn't mean anything, then I don't think you have an understanding of the greatest traditions at the bar, since I was called to the bar in 1990, which is almost 34 years ago "said he. "With the grace of God, I was trained by one of the top attorneys our nation has ever produced. What do you mean I'm your junior, so what? I don't know what practises you've had ".
Prof. Manuh, who was admitted to the bar in 1977, stated during the discussion that the law should be completely scrapped since it was "awful" and "hate-promoting." At times, Mr. Foh-Amoaning asked Prof. Manuh for personal information, such as her hometown, marital status, and sexual orientation.
The Professor said that she would not disclose her hometown "You're asking me whether I know a lawyer, not if I'm homosexual or lesbian. This is irrational and truly incomprehensible for a lawyer. Whatever I am does not have anything to do with the claims I am making about the stance I am taking on the human rights problem ".
