ARE LAWMAKERS REPRESENTING THE PARTY, THEIR CONSTITUENCY, OR THE NATION?

It is widely acknowledged that parliament plays a crucial role in democracies.

Consolidation, deconsolidation, backsliding, or reversal of a democracy may all be attributed to the Parliament because it is the center of any democracy.

If it still holds true, the tale of Ghana's role as a leader in democratic administration in West Africa cannot be told without Parliament.

We should all pay close attention to what occurs in Parliament because of this.

defender of the people

Over the years, the Ghanaian Parliament has served as the voice and guardian of the people by, among other things, offering a forum for discussion and debate on important topics that have an impact on people's everyday lives.

Since 1993, it has kept governments responsible by giving them scrutiny and, to a lesser extent, contesting their choices.

For the proper operation of our democracy, our members of parliament (MPs) have passed several more laws as well as amended numerous other laws.

Parliament is required to try to preserve trust between the public and the executive branch of government.

But, aside from their service requirements, our MPs have prioritized the interests of their political parties more than anything else.

approval problems

A plethora of questions have been raised in light of Parliament's recent ratification of cabinet nominations.

The opposition caucus and supporters see the approval as a blow to good governance, while the governing party caucus and supporters regard it as a success. The subjective nature of the acceptance and how it is perceived depends on one's political worldview, which benefits the political players who are on the front lines.

The adage "the minority has its word and the majority has its way" was frequently used prior to the Eighth Parliament.

Given the size of the dominant party at any one moment, this was successful. Yet the tale has changed since then.

The political parties' ability to influence MPs' voting decisions appears to have grown.

Even though some of these statements have merit, that is not the main subject of this essay.
