In their chase of Jude Bellingham, a midfielder for Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool was obliged to concede defeat, according to Jürgen Klopp.
Liverpool has been negotiating a contract to bring in the England international for years, but has been forced to withdraw because the price is becoming prohibitive for a team with limited funds and pressing requirements elsewhere in the roster.
If Dortmund does decide to sell Bellingham this summer, they are anticipated to demand at least €150 million. When combined with wages and agent fees, this price has caused Liverpool to back away, leaving Manchester City and Real Madrid as the 19-year-most old's likely destinations.
When questioned about Liverpool's choice, Klopp stated at a press conference on Friday: "To be honest, there isn't anything to say about it. Why would we talk about this kind of speculation today if we don't talk about the players we are or aren't signing? There isn't much to say."
When questioned about the circumstance, Klopp compared Liverpool's chase of Bellingham to a youngster wishing for a Ferrari for Christmas.
Jude Bellingham isn't the issue, the boss continued. "I've never understood why we keep talking about things that are theoretically out of reach.
"For instance, we cannot sign six players this summer for Ł100 million each. Realize your capabilities, then use them to your advantage. You must then work with the amount of money you have available. We must complete that task.
"We are not youngsters. A Ferrari is what a five-year-old will claim they want for Christmas if you ask them. You wouldn't think that was a wise move. You can't even drive it, and it's too pricey. It is as it is. It would be a very sad life if this child spent the rest of his life feeling dissatisfied because he couldn't afford a Ferrari. What you can do is all that matters, and you work with that.
That is the way I've always operated. We do everything in our power to obtain what we need and want, but there are times when you have to admit that this or that is not feasible for us, so we step aside and take other actions.
