After completing a 12-week Basic Firefighting Training programme, 1,296 recruit firemen and women graduated from the National Fire Academy and Training School (FATS) in James Town yesterday.

The candidates for the Recruit Course 54 were those who met the requirements for enlistment, passed the selection procedure and pre-recruitment medical assessment.

The recruits, 678 men and 618 women from various parts of the nation, reported to the FATS on January 22, 2023, to begin the training.

The purpose of the training programme was to familiarise the recruits with the fundamentals of firefighting and to enhance their operational competence via hands-on experience.

Students received instruction in topics such practical firefighting, fire safety, road traffic extrication, breathing apparatus, foam and equipment for manufacturing foam, first aid, and communication between the fire service.

At the graduation ceremony, the trainees put on exhilarating drills and simulation exercises that simulated how they would react in an emergency or tragedy.

For the training programmes, prizes were awarded to the best-performing recruits.

Amoako Owusu Enoch, a recruit fireman (RFM), was named the overall best recruit, while Tibilla Sulle Ernest won the award for best in academics.

RFW Dika Asabea Leticia also received the Commandant's Prize, while RFM Frank Ofori Korli won the award for the best foot drills.

Ambrose Dery, the interior minister, praised the commandant of the fire academy and training school as well as the instructors for their diligent efforts in educating the recruits.

He exhorted members of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to dedicate themselves to the mission of the organisation with the utmost professionalism and honesty.

Regarding firefighting, he praised firefighters for their acts of selfless courage in ensuring the release and safety of all victims who were trapped during the most recent Kejetia Market Fire.

Notwithstanding the difficulties they encountered, he claimed that their quick action stopped more property damage.

He stated that the government was committed to enhancing the Service's human resource base and added that two new training school projects and a fire college were already under development.
