The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which skipped the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings in 2020, has been pushed to attend them again by representatives of various political parties.

The party delegates voiced their wish to reinstate the country's largest opposition party to the committee during a closed-door meeting called "Political Party Trust Building Program" held yesterday at the National Peace Council (NPC) in Accra.

Following the committee's refusal to approve the NDC's request for the EC to postpone all next sessions indefinitely due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the NDC boycotted IPAC meetings in March 2020.

After the conference, Nana Yaa Jantuah, the General Secretary of the Convention People's Party (CPP), told the Daily Graphic in an interview that the various political The parties in attendance agreed that the NDC's General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, should spearhead negotiations within his party to resume IPAC discussions.

"We all agreed that it was crucial for the NDC to return to IPAC when one of the major parties proposed it," she added.

Meeting

The National Youth Organiser of the All People's Congress (APC), Abu Hassan; the Second Vice-Chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Rita Asobayire; and the General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), Janet Nabla, were a few of the political party officials there.

Several NPC members, including Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, Numo Blafo Akotia Omaetu III, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, and Joana Adzo Opare, were also present.

The meeting, according to Ms. Jantuah, was a crucial interaction that may aid in addressing the rising influence of hate speech in the nation's political sphere.

Those who carry the flag

Mordecai Thiombiano, the general secretary of the APC, stated to the Daily Graphic in a separate interview that it was crucial for all parties to get down and address matters that would promote peace.

In order to build consensus, he stated it was appropriate for the NDC to visit the IPAC once more.

According to Mr. Thiombiano, another topic that came up during the meetings held in private was the necessity for the NPC to consult with the leaders and founders of the various political parties about the need to reduce hate speech.

Mr. Thiombiano noted that political party founders often had power over their adherents, and as a result, their actions affected the behavior and statements of their adherents, which is why it was important for them to watch what they said.

We have urged the peace council to go farther and engage them on this crucial subject of hate speech since often the supporters of these political players merely replicate the posturing of their leaders, especially their flag bearers, he added.
