The Ministry of Education (MOE) has started a teacher competence framework for information and communications technology (ICT).
Representatives from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), the National Teaching Council (NTC), and the Ghana Education Service (GES) took part in the stakeholder engagement that served as the beginning of the process.
Participants discussed several approaches for putting the framework into practice.
Framework
In accordance with worldwide best practices, the framework aims to establish certain competencies and ICT abilities that instructors at the elementary and secondary levels must possess.
The Korea Funds-in-Trust project, ICT Revolutionizing Education in Africa, is funding the project on behalf of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
500 students would have access to free, high-quality curriculum when the framework is put into action, along with additional digital resources, and 500 teachers would also have access to these materials.
Additionally, ICT in education policy and strategy materials, including braille, would be amended, verified, printed, and disseminated. 300 in-service teachers would get training in offline and emergency remote teaching in pilot schools.
Significance
Abdourahamane Diallo, the UNESCO representative in Ghana, stated that the framework will help to organize and standardize ICT professional development opportunities for teachers and also act as a guide for the creation of training courses for both in-service and pre-service personnel.
"This project will establish the minimum requirements for the competencies and ICT abilities that elementary and secondary educators in the nation must have.
"ICT has a significant influence on education and has permeated all aspects of our everyday lives.
He said, "With the proliferation of digital tools and resources, it is essential that instructors have the ICT abilities to enable efficient teaching and learning."
Mr. Diallo further expressed the expectation that the framework will support continuing initiatives to raise the country's educational standards.
He said, "We are thrilled about the project's potential effect since it is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to guarantee inclusive and equitable quality education and also encourage opportunities for lifelong learning for everyone."
