Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the information minister, has refuted claims that he masterminded a conspiracy to assassinate Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the previous minister for environment, science, technology, and innovation, over the country's efforts to combat illicit mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said in a statement issued on Friday, April 21, 2023, that the allegation against him was untrue and made up.

"Over the years, I couldn't help but have the utmost respect for Prof. Boateng's civic-minded endeavors and his leadership. Because of how highly I regard him, I am very insulted by the untrue statements he has made and the terrible inferences he has attempted to draw about me.

"I have faith that he will really consider the acts and remarks that he made that contributed to his struggles over the upcoming months and years." He should please keep me out of his domestic disputes. The message said, "I am very disappointed, yet I forgive him."

The declaration comes in response to accusations made by Prof. Boateng, a former minister and chairman of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), in a 37-page report to President Akufo-Addo, that Mr. Oppong Nkrumah was plotting to assassinate him because of the fight against illegal mining.

According to the study, multiple government and political party leaders made several attempts to obstruct his efforts to crack down on illicit mining throughout the nation.

In particular, the report said that on February 8, 2020, at Dodowa, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah gathered a group of NPP and NDC journalists to discuss a plan to bring him (Prof. Boateng) down. This allegedly resulted in unfavorable media coverage of Prof. Boateng's campaign against illegal mining.

The report asserted that Mr. Oppong Nkrumah's briefings to Cabinet about the case of the missing excavator were malicious and intentional attacks on him and his campaign against Galamsey.

Oppong Nkrumah, however, refrained from participating in any plan or activity that aims to harm others because it violates his morals and upbringing, and he questioned the viability and wisdom of a situation in which journalists with ties to the NPP and NDC colluded to attack a fellow minister.
