Five institutions in the Volta Region have received praise from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Volta/Oti Region for maintaining a commitment to meeting their bill payment responsibilities.

The National Communications Authority's Volta Regional Office, Ghana Commercial Bank, Stevens Hotel, Skyplus Hotel in Ho, and Regency Salt in Denu are the five; they have never owed the power distributor and have always paid on time.

Following a month-long countrywide revenue mobilization effort to collect GH5.7 billion from its creditors, including GH219 million from the Volta Region, the business received praise.

Since the firm's productivity relies on consistent bill payment, Regency Salt's finance manager, Kiran-Kumar, told the Daily Graphic that the company has always prioritized paying bills on time and on schedule.

We are in the business of using electricity to run our operations; therefore, once we have used it and an ECG bill arrives, we have a responsibility to pay.

"Since we started conducting business in the Volta Region in 2015," he said, "our relationship with ECG has been cordial."

All 11 operating districts in the Volta and Oti regions, including Denu, Sogakope, Akatsi, Keta, Ho, Kpeve, Kpando, Hohoe, Jasikan, Nkwanta, and Dambai, participated in the exercise, which got underway on March 20, 2023.

In the course of the operation, ECG officials visited a number of state institutions, hotels, tertiary institutions, and healthcare facilities, among others, that owed the firm money for the power they used. Some of the debtors were removed from the national grid.

The power distributor's exercise, which was intended to boost the country's electricity industry and economy, was completed last Thursday with a total recovery of GH40 million from debtors.

Following a visit by authorities to the institution on March 28, 2023, certain institutions, including the Bank of Ghana in Hohoe, settled their approximately GH61,000 debt to the ECG as part of the exercise.

The Ghana Water Company Limited paid "GH2 million out of GH17.5 million, while the Ho Teaching Hospital paid GH90,000 out of GH1.4 million, with a monthly commitment of paying GH40,000 to the ECG," he said. The Ghana Water Company Limited also paid a portion of its arrears.

However, other businesses, including KFC and Melcom (Aflao Branch), were terminated before making the corresponding payments of GH 103,000 and GH 55,000. The Ho Airport also contributed GHC 100,000. The Ho Airport and KFC made overpayments to ECG.

Despite this, two Hohoe-based businesses, Volta Forest Products Limited and Matador Multimedia, were disconnected from the power grid for owing ECG more than GH950,000 and GH65,000, respectively.

Afadzato South, Adaklu, and Agortime Ziope district assemblies settled a total of GH 33,000 of the GH 38,000 owing to the electricity distributor, leaving GH 611, GH 2500, and GH 2000 to be paid, respectively.

Additionally, payments of GH 24,000 out of GH 31,500, GH 25,000 out of GH 41,00, and GH 50,000 out of GH 70,000 were made by the South Dayi, Ho West, and Akatsi South district assemblies.

Higher education schools include the University of Health and Allied Sciences and Ho Technical University, which both paid off debts totaling GH$1.6 million and GH$800,000.
